Many people in Japan may know it because the Nasu Imperial Villa is located nearby. It has a long history, with the first hot spring opened in the 7th century. In the Edo period (1603-1867), it was visited by Matsuo Basho and became famous, and was ranked as the east Sekiwake in the Onsen ranking system. Today, Nasu Kogen is a popular tourist destination as a summer resort and the location of the Imperial Villa.
