This 13km GPS art route invites you to draw the shape of a horse as you explore the historic and culturally rich neighborhoods surrounding Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka. As the head shrine of all Sumiyoshi shrines across Japan, Sumiyoshi Taisha has long been venerated as a guardian of seafarers and a spiritual beacon for travelers. One of its most iconic traditions is the Aouma Shinji, or White Horse Ritual, held every year on January 7th. According to ancient belief, simply seeing a white horse at the beginning of the year purifies the spirit and wards off misfortune—a custom that continues to draw many visitors seeking blessings for the year ahead.
Your journey begins at Sumiyoshi Taisha and weaves through a series of historic shrines including Ikune Shrine and Otoshi Shrine. From there, the course connects a number of local transportation hubs such as Sumiyoshi Taisha Station, Sumiyoshi-Higashi Station, Sawanomachi Station, Abiko-mae Station, and Abiko-michi Station. Together with the nearby Sumiyoshi Ward Office, these spots reflect the vibrant everyday life of the community.
