🐦 From Skyscraper Views to Historic Slopes: A 6km Ptarmigan Art in Tennoji 🐦
Tennoji Ward, Osaka, is a district situated on the southern edge of the Uemachi Plateau, where ancient spirituality meets modern urban dynamism. This 6km GPS art course invites you to explore the city’s multi-layered history by sketching a Ptarmigan (Raicho), starting near the historic Tennoji Zoo.
The journey begins near the bustling hubs of Tennoji and Dobutsuen-Mae Stations. You’ll first navigate the shadow of Abeno Harukas, Japan’s iconic skyscraper, before diving into the nostalgic energy of Shinsekai. Passing through the lively Janjan-Yokocho and looking up at the Tsutenkaku Tower, you’ll feel the gritty, soulful heartbeat of Naniwa culture.
The trail then ascends the slopes of the plateau, leading you to a realm of serene temples. Highlights include Isshin-ji Temple, known for its statues made from human ashes, and Arisusan Seikoin Kiyomizudera, which features the only natural waterfall in Osaka City. You’ll also visit spiritual sites like Horikoshi Jinja Shrine, believed to grant one special wish in a lifetime, and Yasui Shrine, the final battleground of the legendary samurai Sanada Yukimura.
The Ptarmigan is an alpine bird inhabiting snowy peaks above 2,500 meters. Drawing its silhouette across Osaka’s historic ridge adds a touch of high-altitude majesty to this bustling city. The minor elevations and stairs along the plateau provide a refreshing physical engagement, mimicking a mini-trekking experience. By the time the digital Ptarmigan blooms on your smartphone screen, you will have woven together futuristic landmarks and Edo-period legacies. Lace up your shoes and take flight through the colorful streets of Tennoji!
