GPS art of a snake, drawn at a Hatsumode spot in Kagawa🐍✨
This GPS art course takes visitors to the area around Usa Shrine, a famous Hatsumode (New Year’s visit) spot in Kagawa, where you can draw a snake, the animal of the Chinese zodiac.
The “Hebikiri-maru (Snake Slayer),” a treasured sword passed down at Usa Shrine in Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture, comes from a legend that during the Genroku era (1688-1704) Ajari Nobumasa, abbot of Shinjoin Temple, received a divine oracle and used a sword dedicated by Tango-no-Mori Samukawa Motonari to kill a giant snake that was hiding in the shrine building. Since this event, the sword has been named “Hebekiri-maru” and is treasured at the shrine. This legend is believed to be a story of the extermination of the dragon god named after Susanoo, who defeated the eight-forked serpent, and is said to be a remnant of the snake god belief.
