This is Hokkaido Jingu Shrine, a Hatsumode (New Year’s visit) spot in Sapporo. The shrine was established in the early Meiji era (1868-1912) as Sapporo Shrine, the guardian deity of Hokkaido’s pioneer settlers, and is now recognized as the newest shrine in Ezo-no-kuni. It boasts the highest number of worshippers in Hokkaido, and earthen bells (ue-ring) are available for purchase only during the New Year’s holiday.
