This is a series of GPS art courses that draw the place name “Katsushika” in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo.
Katsushika Ward was created in 1932 through the merger of Honda Town, Okudo Town, Minami Ayase Town, Kameo Village, Shinjuku Town, Kanamachi Town, and Mizumoto Village. The name of the ward is so old that it appears in the Manyoshu, a collection of Japanese poetry, and there are various theories as to its origin. There is a theory that the name “Katsu (葛)” means cliff or plateau and “Shika (飾)” means low land, and that the name was given because of the appearance of the land with many plateaus and lowlands, or because of the thick growth of “kazura (葛),” or the “hunting ground,” or because the area was a “hunting ground.
This course offers a tour of the downtown area surrounded by the Arakawa and Nakagawa Rivers. The area is surrounded by levees, and is located in the zero-meter zone below sea level. We hope you will try this tour as an opportunity to get to know the waterfront area in the suburbs of Tokyo!
