GPS art of a snake drawn at one of Ibaraki’s most popular snake spot🐍✨
This GPS art course takes you to the area around Jaike Pond, a Ibaraki’s spot associated with snakes, where you can draw a snake, the animal of the Chinese zodiac.
Jaike (“snake pond” litterally), located in Sakai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, is also the name of a place, and the pond from which it takes its name actually exists. There is also a legend about a giant snake in this pond.
A giant snake living in the village was taking a nap in the pond, and the villagers were so frightened that the temple priest threw a crystal ball with “10 years” written on it into the pond and asked the snake to move out. The serpent moved to Inba-numa in Chiba and returned ten years later to find that the crystal ball had been rewritten to read “one thousand years. The serpent left again, and was then held responsible for the villagers’ evil deeds. The villagers later reflected on their misdeeds and built a shrine to offer the serpent a memorial service.
Since 2025 is the Year of the Snake, Jaike Pond may become a popular spot. Please try it instead of a New Year’s visit 🐍✨
