GPS art of a snake drawn at one of Nara’s most popular Hatsumode spot🐍✨
This GPS art course takes you to the area around Omiwa Jinja, a Nara spot associated with snakes, where you can draw a snake, the animal of the Chinese zodiac.
The Omiwa Shrine in Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan, and Mt. Miwa itself is considered the deity. Since ancient times, there has been a belief in a snake god, and snakes are considered important as messengers of the gods of this shrine. In particular, the white snake is considered to be an incarnation of the deity Omotonushi-no-Ohkami and is worshipped as a sacred being. The Minokami-no-Sugi cedar on the shrine grounds is a sacred tree named after the white snake that lives there, an incarnation of the Miwa deity Omononokami. Eggs, the snake’s favorite food, are offered by worshippers.
Since 2025 is the Year of the Snake, Omiwa Jinja may become a popular spot. Please try it during your first visit to the temple 🐍✨
