🐦 Trace the Ancient Capital: An 11km Journey Through Heijo Palace 🐦
Nara City, the site of the ancient capital Heijo-kyo established in 710, is a treasure trove of Japanese history. At its heart lies the expansive Heijō Palace Site Historical Park, where vast skies and swaying pampas grass evoke the glory of the Tenpyo period. This 11km GPS art course invites you to sketch a magnificent bird on your map while running through this historically rich and highly accessible flat basin.
Your journey begins at the impressive Kentoshi Ship (Replica of the mission ship to Tang China). After passing the informative Heijokyu Izanai-kan Museum, you will run counterclockwise around the southern area of the park. Heading southwest, the trail brings you to the tranquil Nishinokyo area, home to breathtaking World Heritage sites such as Toshodai-ji Temple, founded by the Chinese monk Ganjin, and Yakushi-ji Temple, famous for its elegant pagodas. Along the way, you can also explore classic cars at the Mahoroba Museum or take a relaxing break at the Yurara-no-yu hot springs.
Looping back east past Nara Station and Nara City Hall, the route returns to the ancient palace grounds. The grand finale awaits at the brilliant vermilion Suzakumon Gate. By the time your digital art is complete, you will have experienced the true scale and spiritual depth of Japan’s 1,300-year-old capital.
