Suma Ward in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, is a historic coastal destination celebrated since ancient times in classical Waka poetry and the legendary Tales of Genji for its picturesque white sands and green pines. This 8km GPS art course invites you to sketch a Ptarmigan (Raicho), using the newly revitalized Suma Seaside Park and the beautiful corridor between the mountains and the Seto Inland Sea as your creative canvas.
The journey starts near the vibrant waterfront, passing the state-of-the-art Kobe Suma Seaworld and the breezy CAFE＆DINER GOOD BEACH CLUB at the Suma Yacht Harbor. Tracing the bird’s silhouette, you will walk past Tsunashiki Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to the god of learning, before heading inland toward the Suma Kumin Center. The route leads you through peaceful green oases like Shimo-Nakajima Park and along the scenic paths of Myōhōji River Park, a spot famous for its cherry blossoms.
The Ptarmigan is a sacred alpine bird and an Ice Age relic that symbols the snowy heights of Japan’s mountains. Etching this alpine icon across Suma’s sunny, flat marine plain offers a playful poetic contrast that makes GPS art so unique.
