GPS art of the place name “Sugito” drawn in Sugito Town✨
This is a series of GPS art courses that draw the place name “Sugito” in Sugito Town, Saitama.
The name “Sugito (杉戸)” is said to have originated from the name of a ferry crossing, which was once called “Sugito (杉門)”. “Sugi (杉)” refers to sand and gravel, and “to (門)” is an Ainu word that refers to water-related landforms such as lakes, marshes, and landing places.
Sugito-juku, a post town on the Nikko Kaido highway, was established in 1616 during the Edo period (1603-1868), and in 1889, the surrounding villages were merged to form the town of Sugito. Sugito-cho has been in and out of talks of merging with the neighboring city of Kasukabe up to the present day.
This drawing is a tour around the center of Sugito Town. Most of the town is covered with rice paddies, but this course mainly passes through the urban area. You can feel the roadside culture along National Route 4, one of the main arteries in Japan. The distance is just right, so please try it as a light exercise!
