GPS art of a snake, drawn at a Hatsumode spot in Shimane🐍✨
This GPS art course takes visitors to the area around Sada Shrine, a famous Hatsumode (New Year’s visit) spot in Shimane Prefecture, where you can draw a snake, the animal of the Chinese zodiac.
Sata Shrine in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, enshrines the dragon serpent god Ryuja. The dragon serpent is a mystical being that appears in the month of Shinzai, and is believed to bring blessings to ward off disasters such as water and fire. The dragon serpent deity’s tail and scales are related to the “fan,” “tortoise shell,” and “ring-break” divine emblems of the shrine, and it is said that successive generations of Matsue feudal lords had strong faith in the deity. The dragon serpent raising has been performed for generations by the “dragon serpent celebrant,” who has dedicated the dragon serpent to the shrine. The Itabashi family still enshrines an object that commemorates this tradition.
In 2025, Sada Shrine may become another popular spot. Please try it during your first visit to the shrine🐍✨
