🐦 Through the City of Water and Peace: A 9km Ptarmigan in Hiroshima 🐦
Hiroshima City’s Naka Ward, situated on the expansive delta formed by the Ota River, is celebrated as the “City of Water” and serves as a global beacon for peace. This 9km GPS art course invites you to sketch a Ptarmigan, starting from the Hiroshima Victims Memorial Cenotaph within Peace Memorial Park. The route dynamically traces the riverbanks around the scenic sandbank caught between the Tenma and Honkawa Rivers, blending natural beauty with profound history.
The journey begins by passing the Flame of Peace, the Children’s Peace Monument, and the world-renowned Atomic Bomb Dome. As you head north along the calm waters, the trail guides you to the Honkawa Elementary School Peace Museum, which conveys the tragic history and resilient recovery of the city. Continuing the loop, you will encounter serene spiritual landmarks that have watched over Hiroshima’s reconstruction, such as Sorasaya Inao Shrine, Hirose Shrine, and Hongwanji Hiroshima Betsuin. Heading back south, the final stretch leads you through the Gates of Peace, passing the International Conference Center Hiroshima and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum before you reach the finish.
This flat 9km loop offers an incredibly moving and accessible run. When the Ptarmigan’s silhouette appears on your map, you will have intimately connected with Hiroshima’s message of hope and its beautiful riverine landscapes.
