🐦 Through Kaga’s Historic Castle Grounds and Cultural Gardens: A 6km Ptarmigan Loop 🐦
Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture flourished as the prestigious castle town of the Maeda clan’s Kaga Domain, renowned for its rich artistic traditions and timeless aesthetics. Centered around Kanazawa Castle, the city gracefully blends Edo-period samurai heritage, serene gardens, and cutting-edge contemporary culture. This 6km GPS art course invites you to sketch a Ptarmigan, starting from Oyama Shrine, famous for its stained-glass gate, and tracing a clockwise loop around the castle’s outer perimeter before entering the grounds.
The cultural run leads past the culinary hub of Omicho Market and the elegant Kaga-Yuzen Kimono Center. Winding south past the iconic landscape of Kenroku-en garden, the route connects sacred and modern landmarks including Ishiura Shrine, the circular Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, the Kanazawa Noh Museum, and KAMU KANAZAWA. Passing the open lawns of Shiinoki Green Space and the red-brick Ishikawa Shikou Memorial Park, you will cross into Kanazawa Castle Park through the reconstructed Nezumita-mon Gate to navigate across the historic fortress interior for the finish.
