Walking Among Hydrangeas in a Hot-Spring Town🐌
Gero Onsen, tucked along the Hida River in Gifu Prefecture, is celebrated as one of Japan’s Three Great Hot Springs for its silky waters and timeless streetscape. From early June to early July, the famed Hydrangea Road stretches from Gero Station through the spa district, lining the way with vibrant blossoms that transform the rainy season into a sea of color.
This 11-kilometer GPS art course traces a playful snail shape through the heart of the town. Walkers pass riverside promenades, narrow lanes wreathed in rising steam, and climb toward the Gero Onsen Gassho-mura, an open-air museum where thatched gassho houses relocated from Shirakawa-go stand amid blooming hydrangeas. The route blends gentle riverside stretches with short hill climbs, offering changing vistas of misty mountains, stone alleys, and flower-filled gardens.
Drizzle-cooled stone paths, brilliant hydrangea clusters, and the nostalgic charm of a historic spa town come together to create a sensory journey that captures the essence of Japan’s rainy season. Whether you soak in an open-air bath before you start or reward yourself afterward, this course lets you weave hot-spring culture, local history, and early-summer nature into a single, memorable work of GPS art. Lace up, follow the snail’s spiral, and experience Gero Onsen in a whole new way🐌🐌🐌
